Future Gear: Seeking the
Handheld Holy Grail
http://www.pcworld.com/features/article/0,aid,86243,00.asp This article is about the future of handhelds. It observes the fact that what information technology is striving for is complete "convergence". The idea is to make everything a person could need into one device. PC home computers pretty much do this already (my computer is almost my entire entertainment, study, and work system) but they fall short in one major area: portability. So the information technology industry is fixing it through the design of handheld computers with wireless phones intrgrated into them. One of the soon to be newer ones is the Danger Hip Top, "a 5-ounce device that includes a cell phone, a Web browser, an instant messenger, and an e-mail client" apparently the idea is to use the net as a back up drive instead of the usual PC hard drive that most existing PDAs use, that way you always have the information you put in it even if the device itself is lost in Hong Kong. It has many other features such as 2.5G Internet speed technologies with a theoretical maximum speed of 115 kilobits per second which is quite fast. The article goes on to talk about 3G technologies, which will be around in a few years. This technology will allow for cell "video phones" and even greater convergence of technologies and devices. I thought it was a pretty interesting article and am looking forward to the devices they are talking about. !
