Touchscreens are a quick any easy way
to perform a computerized task and have been demonstrated for many years.
But as we move on into the 21st century, touchscreens will become more
and more popular with computer applications. In the past, they have
mainly been used in information kiosks, casinos, and limited manufacturing
and retailing companies. But now more companies are jumping to this
touch technology to help ease the struggle of user error and to increase
the transaction speed. All the new casino gaming machines no longer
have levers or buttons. They are now incorporating touch screens
to make the machines more durable. Also, special education has begun
using these as a more effective way to teach their mentally challenged
students.
“The growth rate for the touchscreen
market is expected to be 20 to 22 per cent compounded annually over the
next three years. Last year, touch technology raked in almost US$500 million
with a prediction of US$2 billion by 2002, reported Hensel.” The
only hamper on touchscreens right now is the cost. A good quality
touchscreen can range anywhere from $450 to $3000 a piece. As the
market demand for these screens increases the price will eventually fall.
