One of the most important aspects of a company's web presence is
a client's ability to easily search and quickly obtain the
information they require. It is the business responsibility to
ensure that this process is rapid, efficient, and uncomplicated.
Google has given businesses the ability to incorporate its
proprietary search capabilities into their websites for some time.
Now, however, companies can take that ability a step further,
modifying the appearance of the results pages, and tweaking the XML
to cleverly direct clients to desired information about particular
products or services. The major benefit is that the site is indexed
just as it would be for the search engine itself, and the the load
is placed on Google's servers rather than the companies own limited
server capacities. The service is relatively simple to acquire and
use, and the price is within the means of any company. Google also
provides a server-side service of indexing a company's material
stored in file servers, content management systems, databases, and
other sources for internal use. |

When it comes to indexing and search capabilities, Google is by
far the 900 pound gorilla in the forest. A company's two main
focuses of its web presence should be effective communication and
search ability. It is all in how efficiently a company can provide
to its client the exact information the client requests that
determines the success of such an endeavor. Relying on Google to
facilitate such a function on a company's website seems
unquestionable. Proprietary search functions, or other third party
software to facilitate such capabilities would probably be adequate.
However, Google's price for this service makes for an enticing
offer. I would definitely recommend this service if this was within
my scope of responsibility. |
