Ralph Waldo Emerson
One of America's most original and influential thinkers,
Emerson began his career as a minister. Soon he began
to feel his personal beliefs conflicted with the doctrines
of his church, and he resigned and turned to writing and
lecturing. Instrumental in shaping the ideas of a group
of writers know as the Transcendentals, Emerson's ideas,
especially his doctrine of "Self Reliance," are still
part of our life today.
