Students graduating with a degree
in theatre, whether it is a Bachelor of
Arts or Bachlor of Fine Arts, have numerous opportunities
for employment. Many of our students graduate with a teaching
certificate and are well-prepared to begin teaching theatre arts at
the
junior high or high school level. A number of our students, especially
the Bachlor of Fine Arts graduates, continue on to graduate school
for a 2-3 year program where they specialize in either acting,
directing, design, or management. This advanced degree
allows them to pursue a teaching career on the college level, and
it
better prepares them to go into professional theatre work if that
is what they
have chosen. Theatre management is a very lucrative and important
part of
the theatre. Students who show interest and skills in this area are
encouraged
to take business and marketing classes while at McMurry. Managing
a box office, writing grants, overseeing budgets, and developing promotion
campaigns are all necessary parts of running a theatre, and many jobs
are available in this area. Our students receive excellant instruction
and hands-on work in the scene shop. Carpenters, painters, and designers
are in greta
demand. If the students show interest and talent in scene work, they
are encouraged to continue to learn more about this area and become
more comfortable in and around the scene shop.
The same is true with costuming and even prop work.
